HOSTELLING INTERNATIONAL

[ top ]

Dancing Bear Inn is a licensed member of the Hostelling International network.

HI Hostel LogoHostelling International (HI) is the oldest, most well established network of hostel accommodation in the world. With over 6,000 member facilities worldwide, it is also the largest accommodation network in the world. Member facilities in the HI network are inspected once per year and must meet a stringent set of standards in order to maintain association in the network. While hostels are generally known for the unique character of each facility, staying at an HI hostel is your guarantee that certain levels of comfort and amenities are standard across all facilities in the HI network.

Hostelling International is a non-profit membership organization. Memberships must be purchased in the country where you permanently reside, however, your membership is honored at any HI hostel worldwide. If you are already visiting a foreign country and would like the benefits of a membership, it is possible to purchase an International Guest Card (which is valid for a shorter time). Memberships and Guest Cards can be purchased at any hostel in the HI network, or through the regional or national offices in each country.

Hostels which are part of the HI network offer discounts on the cost of overnight stays to HI members. In addition, HI membership is your key to many other valuable discount programs offered exclusively to HI members by participating retailers, tour operators, airlines, and more.

Hostelling is a way of traveling that emphasizes the qualities of community and shared experience, over the need to simply find a room for the night. The tradition of hostelling reaches back to hut-to-hut travel in Europe and countries such as Australia and New Zealand, where hostels have existed for decades. Here in North America, even though the first hostels were established as far back as the 1930's, hostelling is only now gaining widespread popularity.

For many years, hostelling was associated primarily with youth. Today, a large and growing percentage of HI members are young professionals, families and active seniors who share a desire for essential experiences and a sense of community in the places they visit and stay.

Here in Canada, an HI membership is $35.00 per person plus GST. To learn more about hostelling and Hostelling International, visit:
