DANCING BEAR EXPERIENCE
When was the last time you met interesting people and made fast
friends while staying at a hotel?
Unlike hotels, the Dancing Bear rents beds as well as rooms, and
offers facilities which are common, rather than private. This means
that most of the time, you're having an experience which is directly
shared with other guests. And, since a great many of our guests are
from foreign countries, you'll find the ambiance to be naturally
multicultural.
What do I get at the Dancing Bear that I won't find at a hotel?
We call ourselves a "make your own bed & breakfast" to
describe our emphasis on providing comfortable, but basic facilities
- you bring the "extras."
We offer a fully provisioned guest kitchen/dining area where you
can prepare your own meals, a guest laundry facility, a cozy common
room with internet access and a library of books, games and movies.
You'll also find secure storage, bike racks, ski lockers and on-site
parking.
Our accommodation is simple, but extremely comfortable. We provide
linens and duvets, but you make your own bed. Rooms are ‘retreat
style’ without telephone or television. All of our beds are "bunk
style." Many of our rooms feature an attractive washbasin/vanity,
hardwood floors, hand crafted desks. All rooms offer secure storage.
None of our rooms offer private bathrooms — Guests share clean,
well appointed washrooms and showers.
Frequently, the Dancing Bear Inn will host special events such as
movie nights and potluck dinners, art openings and lectures. We are
connected with a number of highly qualified experienced tour providers
offering everything from scenic hiking and bicycle trips, to explorations
of Kootenay Lake by kayak and sailboat. We facilitate connections
between our guests and local residents who may speak the same languages,
or share similar interests. We create community.
So..."The Bear" is more than just an inexpensive place
to sleep?
Yes. Our philosophy of "creating community" is not just
about the ambiance we offer at the Inn. It's about opening a doorway
through which travelers can enter into the life of the region they
are visiting, and through which residents of that region can enter
in return, to gain from the energy, vitality and wealth of ideas
which travelers bring with them.
And what about the cost?
Based on room rates only, a stay at the Dancing Bear can sometimes
look just as expensive as an overnight in a conventional hotel. But
look again...
- Our overnight rates are inclusive of all applicable charges.
And, if you're traveling on your own, you can choose to share a
room with other travelers, instead of paying for an entire room
yourself.
- You can cook your own meals, thereby saving on the cost of dining
out for every meal.
- You're sharing a dynamic environment with international travelers
from around the world and participating in activities and programs
that connect you with others.
And, you're having this experience for as little as $18 per person
/ per night (or even less, if you are part of a larger group)
Do I have to be a member of Hostelling International to stay
at the Dancing Bear Inn?
No, however, members of Hostelling International do receive preferential
overnight rates. Memberships or International Guest Cards may be
purchased through our reception desk.
Is Hostelling only for "Youth"?
No. Hostelling is for "youth" of all ages. In fact, the
average age of stay at the Dancing Bear Inn is between 25-40 years
of age, with young professionals, families and active seniors making
up a large percentage of our regular guests.
